Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Joseph McLemore
Joseph McLemore is a fourth and fifth grade math teacher at Edison Elementary School.
I’m a product of Achievement Schools and for me, there is no greater joy than to be able to work with students who come from the same environment that I come from. It is an opportunity for me to walk in my purpose.
I feel inspired to work summer school, because it’s an opportunity to bridge the gap between the regular school year to the next school year.
When my students see how much I love math, it helps them become more comfortable in class and inevitably fall in love with the subject as well. This also helps them enjoy coming to school and class.
Once our students recognize our love for them and how authentic we are in our teaching, they begin to work harder and excel—and the sky’s the limit. We are so proud of our students and the hard work that they put forth, which is evident in some of our data with FSA scores.
Working at an Achievement School feels like one big family. As teachers, we do a lot together and focus on collaborative planning. During our faculty meetings, we bounce ideas off of one another, so we’re all comfortable. This is an opportunity for beginning teachers and veteran teachers to come together and learn together, so that we can help inspire one another.
With our community involvement, like our Community Ball-Out and talent show for example, we want to make sure our parents, grandparents and neighbors know that we are a community school. The doors are always open and we are always here.
I am very excited for next school year. Our first goal is to make sure the students are comfortable and know that they are loved and appreciated. Once students get that sense of importance, that they matter, then we can start teaching. I think that’s the most important thing—to build those relationships and make sure they are solid, so that the children always know we have their best interest at heart.
