Shaw Elementary Students and Staff Celebrate
Generous Donation from Patel Family Foundation

Tampa, Fla. – (January 8, 2019) – It is a new beginning for some of our youngest learners in the university area neighborhoods surrounding Shaw Elementary School. On Friday, January 11, at 3 p.m., Hillsborough County Public Schools, in collaboration with Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel and the Patel Family Foundation, will officially open four new Pre-K classrooms. The school is located at 11311 N. 15th St., Tampa.

The Shaw Elementary Early Learning Center has been made possible through the generosity of the Patel Family Foundation with a donation of $850,000. Many families in this area do not have access to quality early education, which research shows puts children on a path toward lifelong success. The Early Learning Center will make sure children at Shaw Elementary School have the same opportunities to be successful.

“Education is the best gift you can give somebody. If you want to erase the cycle of poverty then the only available tool is education,” explained Dr. Kiran Patel.

Students began learning in these new classrooms this school year. The four modular classrooms were specifically designed with bathrooms and washers and dryers. Superintendent Jeff Eakins, School Board members, district and school staff will join the Patel family for this ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

“If our children are coming in not knowing their letters and sounds or how to write their names, they are already behind,” said Shaw Elementary Principal Renel Mathurin. “So having this building here, kids coming in, building on their foundation, when they get to kindergarten they are not behind, they are ready.”

Intervention in early education provides Pre-K students with a solid foundation and affords them a level playing field. This Early Learning Center will offer more resources for students to be successful and creates a model that can be replicated across our area.
