Hispanic Students Explore Pathways to College

Pasos al Futuro

October 18, 2018
Hillsborough County Public Schools is hosting its annual Pasos al Futuro college information nights “en español.”  These events are conducted in Spanish only and provide students and their families valuable information about preparing for college, applying to college, accessing financial aid and how to look for scholarship opportunities.

Students and their families will gain critical knowledge as the district prepares students for life after graduation. Seniors attending will have a unique opportunity to apply for a $250 scholarship. In addition, two grade-level focused presentations and a college student panel will be part of the experience. Students and their families from 8th grade through 12th grade are encouraged to attend.

Gabriela Rivas is a 2017-18 Pasos participant and an enthusiastic supporter of the Pasos al Futuro program. She says, "Pasos al Futuro has helped me a lot because when I entered school I did not know English, I did not know how to follow the path to university. The educational system was very different from what I had in my country. I attended the Pasos al Futuro meeting and it opened the path for me to obtain the credits and different classes that I need, how can I obtain a scholarship and be able to enter a good university without having to pay so much money out of pocket and also how the government can help me in my studies. I also learned how one has to prepare since high school, has to prepare to have the highest chances to enter college. Pasos al Futuro gave me the light to be able to attend college and apply for financial aid".

Her father, Alberto Rivas, is equally positive about how the Pasos al Futuro program helped his daughter.  "I knew a lot about education in Cuba, but the education system in this country differs from that of Cuba.  Attending that [Pasos] meeting on that day is the best thing that has happened to me since I've been in this country.  It gave me the opportunity to guide my child, toknow what I had to do, and the path I had to follow with the supreme goal of my child attending university".

Eveleen Garcia, a Bilingual School Counselor, says there's important information for parents and students. "It's never too early to establish clear expectations at an early age, because it allows our students to know exactly where they are going.  Starting from eighth grade to twelfth grade, families are invited to these events to come learn more about planning for college. This is a family event, not just for students, as we want to make sure that all parents have all the necessary tools to be that great source of support for their children".

The first Pasos al Futuro event of the 2018-19 school year will be held on Thursday, October 18, at 6 p.m., at Leto High School in the auditorium. All Spanish-speaking families are encouraged to attend.
