Ruskin Elementary student Nasir Page enjoyed the spotlight as one of the winners honored at the Hillsborough County Sheriff Junior Deputy Awards Breakfast. Ruskin Principal Rebecca Salgado proudly shared, “this is the first time Ruskin has ever had a winner.” Principal Salgado continues to explain that Nasir Page was selected out of hundreds of essays. Nasir in particular focused his essay on the importance of having a Deputy on campus, someone you trust and [you would consider to be] a role model!
Corporal Benjamin Kenney from the HCSO Community Outreach Division shared that fifth graders from among 40 Elementary Schools within Hillsborough County had the opportunity to participate in the Junior Deputy Program. The program is designed for fifth grade students to understand and respect the law by practicing good citizenship. Students from across the district were asked to write a 250-500 word essay where the principal submitted the top four at their school. Twelve winners were selected from more than 150 submissions. Students wrote on the topic, "What being a Junior Deputy means to me."
Each winner, their family members, a school administrator and a teacher, were invited to an awards breakfast ceremony at the Sheriff's Operations Center in Ybor City. The winners met Sheriff Gee and awarded a new Kindle Fire tablet in addition to a check provided by Florida West Coast Credit in the amount of $25.
The Junior Deputy Program is funded through annual donations from the community and funds requested by the sheriff’s office through the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF).The program is meant to help students understand and respect the law by practicing good citizenship. The program is taught over three school days, and includes topics ranging from shoplifting and avoiding gangs, to the dangers of drugs. Students even learn about the criminal court system by participating in a mock courtroom trial.” Corporal Kenney explained that the Sheriff’s Junior Deputies League has provided educational programs to the students of Hillsborough County for more than 40 years.
