Smart Start Week - 5 Reasons it's so Important for ALL Students

August 17, 2020 - Student Success

If you are a parent who chose brick and mortar for your student, you may be wondering about the importance of that first week of school when all students will be eLearning.

This first week is important for your student. Smart Start Week is as critical for students heading back to the classroom on August 31st as it is for those continuing with eLearning.

Here are 5 reasons why:

  • Let’s be clear, the first day of school is August 24th. Teachers will be taking attendance every single day of Smart Start Week. If your child does not log in and take part in eLearning, they will be counted absent. That is NOT the way to start off a new school year.
  • It’s an excellent way to become comfortable with Canvas and Edgenuity. Canvas is our new Learning Management System and it’s what all teachers will be using for the entire school year. Smart Start week is a perfect time to ask YOUR TEACHER questions about Canvas.
  • The first week of school is always about getting to know your teacher and classmates a bit. The same is true this year. You do not want to miss the opportunity to establish a positive vibe with your teacher(s).
  • There is the chance that your school may be affected by a case of COVID-19 and your child will have to be quarantined. If that’s the case, Smart Start Week will provide them with a strong eLearning base so they can transition seamlessly from brick and mortar to eLearning if the need arises.
  • Smart Start Week will give students a chance to talk about what they can expect when they head back to the classroom. Things will look different. Smart Start Week allows teachers and students to discuss expectations, not only academically, but what’s expected of students when it comes to staying safe and healthy.

Even though we will be learning virtually, the expectation of Smart Start week is the same as any other first week of school. There will be assignments and there will be learning. Missing this week is just like missing the entire first week of school.

Your school will be contacting you over the next few days with your student’s teacher information. The best thing you can do right now is make sure your student can log on to Canvas and is ready to go for August 24th. You can access Canvas by going to Our district has also created videos to walk families and students through the process.
