While the coronavirus pandemic has affected social interactions, our school district is adapting to the changes by hiring hundreds of teachers virtually for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.
Our principals are working hard to recruit talented teachers, all through virtual hiring.
Principal of Sumner High School, David Brown, has conducted 40 virtual interviews through zoom, the video conferencing program.
Our school district is accepting and finalizing submitted applications each workday as we actively hire teachers for the upcoming school year. Our employees are all working together to “Accelerate Hillsborough.”
“It’s just a new way of work,” said Brown. “Just like our teachers, students and parents are having to learn the eLearning platform, we are doing distance hiring.”
So far, Brown has been able to hire over 100 teachers, many through virtual hiring, and only needs to fill 8 more positions.
Recent college graduate, Julie Chase is a prospective teacher that was interviewed by Brown. She choose to “Teach in Tampa” because of all the opportunities, trainings and benefits our school district offers.
“A lot of the interview is body language, meeting them and shaking their hand, said Chase. “I was worried that [my personality] wouldn’t come across on camera but once we started talking, it was very natural and we all just laughed like ‘this is a weird circumstance, but this is what we are doing’.”
During her internship, Chase was teaching lessons to her students via zoom, so she was familiar with the program.
“It’s an advantage to figure it out now because in the future we could be doing this more and more,” she said. “So, take this as something you can learn and improve on.
With Sumner High School expected to open in August of 2020, Brown said slowing down isn’t an option.
“Kids are going to be sitting in those seats come August 10th, we have to be ready to go and give them the education they deserve,” said Brown
