Samantha Hartman is a passionate first-grade teacher at Mort Elementary.
Hartman can often be seen hugging or high-fiving students in the hall and in her classroom. You can easily see why she is a favorite at the school and why she was a finalist as Teacher of the Year for the district. She was honored to be recognized her work but says that what brings her the most joy each day is seeing her students grow and become leaders.
“This is my fourth year as a teacher at Mort Elementary,” said Hartman. “I was an intern here for a few years and chose to stay because kids are more than just a test score here. They are in our hearts all the time.”
Becoming a teacher at an Achievement School wasn’t a hard decision for Hartman. She could personally relate to the daily struggles her students face outside of the school. As a child, her school was her safe place and she wanted to provide the same environment to her students.
Hartman’s advice for interns who are considering teaching in an Achievement School is to “Listen to your heart. If you really want to make a difference, these are the kind of schools where you are validated each and every day.”
She concludes, “We may have five grades in the school, but we are all one heartbeat doing all we can to help our students achieve.”
