Guests share stories at African-American Read-In events

Kourtney Berry wanted to share inspirational stories. Gig Brown loves jazz and came to share it with students who ended up way more interested in his Tampa Police Department uniform. Alicia McDowell used her singing voice to bring a book about famous dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey to life.

All three were among dozens of volunteers who visited various Hillsborough County schools as part of African-American Read-In events held to coincide with Black History Month.

Students Team Up for Reading to Celebrate Literacy Week

Celebrate Literacy, Florida! and Bailey Elementary did just that, by holding a "Team Up for Reading Day" with their Bailey Scholars and Strawberry Crest High School. Over 60 high school athletes from Strawberry Crest partnered up to read a sports related book or article to elementary students and assisted students with a reading comprehension wrap-up activity.

Now Introducing Knights Elementary's Truman Kahler Library of Knowledge and Innovation

After creating concepts and building partnerships, Knights Elementary School has re-imagined their library, by honoring the late Mr. Truman E. Kahler, Jr., naming it the Truman Kahler Library of Knowledge and Innovation.

Mr. Kahler’s family and friends, along with current and retired Hillsborough County Public Schools’ teachers and administrators witnessed and celebrated his legacy and toured the new library. The Library is centered around four main foundations, which include inquiry, discovery, creativity and innovation

HAAL Pass opens a world of additional public library resources to HCPS students

HALL Pass (Hillsborough All Access Libraries) will enable every K-12 Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) student heading back to the classroom to have expanded public library access to more than a million books, 57,800 audiobooks, 91,360 DVDs, 50,290 newspapers and magazines, 37,500 music CDs, and nearly 288,000 eBooks.

Rampello students enjoyed a STEMtacular Storybook Walk

Approximately 65 kindergarteners from Rampello K-8 Downtown Magnet school walked the corridors of the Raymond O. Shelton School Administrative Center (ROSSAC) for the annual Storybook Walk. Kindergartners were dressed as their favorite book characters.

Diana Rendina, media specialist at Stewart Middle Magnet School, is the recipient of the SLJ (School Library Journal) "Build Something Bold" Award.  This prestigious award is sponsored by LEGO® Education and honors the media specialist who takes the creative approach in programming and lesson planning that incorporates hands-on learning in the library and classroom.
