The K-12 STEM Education Department facilitates the practice of STEM education for ALL students in Hillsborough County Public Schools. Our approach to STEM education includes utilizing of a network of collaborating partners including: institutes of higher education, business partners, philanthropic organizations, and many science rich institutions. Through the use of experiential hands-on learning, a constructivist approach to education, and cross curricular collaborations between Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Career and Technical Education we ready our students for college and career success, thus preparing them for life.

The STEM Department collaborates and hosts many STEM-centric competitions, opportunities, and experiences for our HCPS students ranging from local robotics competitions to the HCPS STEM fair and the Student Spaceflight Experiment Program to the International Space Station (ISS). Below you will find different links to our STEM experiences, contacts within the STEM Department, and a multitude of STEM partners throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond.

Hillsborough Schools, along with area investors, are leading the way in teaching coding. One of the courses is Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles, where kids earn college credit for taking our high school courses.

Larry Plank, the Executive Director for K-12 Science Education, will begin a three-year term as president of the National Science Education Leadership Association in 2020. The NSELA is dedicated to helping K-12 teachers around the nation become the most effective educators and leaders in STEM-related fields through the most rigorous courses.
