Lopez Elementary Students Spend a Fun-filled Day with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Celebration of the Dairy Council of Florida Hometown Grant
The holidays came a little early when Lopez Elementary School was chosen as a recipient of a $10,000 Hometown Grant, thanks to an initiative set up by the NFL and Fuel Up to Play 60. Lopez Elementary made a commitment to actively participate in the Fuel Up to Play 60, which is a nutrition and physical activity program that encourages students to take control of their own health by implementing long-term, positive changes for themselves and their school.
To celebrate them being a grant recipient, the Dairy Council of Florida and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visited Lopez Elementary on Tuesday, December 5, bringing students an afternoon full of surprises.
Energy and anticipation filled the auditorium as the curtains were drawn to reveal the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Rookie Club surprising the third, fourth and fifth graders with brand new Nike tennis shoes and socks.
With Lopez having 80% of their student population on free or reduced lunch, the gift of proper nutrition incentives, new Fuel Up Play 60 t-shirts, and brand new tennis shoes were received with overwhelming joy and excitement. Lopez also received new menu boards, coolers and a cafeteria cart to ensure kids are making healthy choices. The fifth graders even spent the afternoon getting to know the Buccaneers while practicing Play 60 football drills with them.
“Thanks to the Dairy Council of Florida this was an incredible opportunity to bring awareness to our community and for our students to have the opportunity to meet the Bucs players all while learning about proper nutrition,” said Michael Engle, principal of Lopez Elementary.
Students from Lopez Elementary were also invited to cheer on the Buccaneers when they take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday, December 10. Select Lopez Elementary students will hold flags at the start of the game and the school will receive a special shout out on the jumbo tron.
